24/1/2008 - James Purnell takes over as Work and Pensions Secretary

James Purnell has been appointed the new Work and Pensions Secretary following the resignation of Peter Hain from the Cabinet.

Hain resigned after donations towards his Labour deputy leadership campaign were referred to the police. His resignation led to a Cabinet reshuffle earlier this month.

Purnell, former Culture Secretary, is said to be honoured to continue his predecessor's work towards welfare reform.
